Inception is a great film because it is not only well-crafted & has a great storyline, it also reminded me that that awesome Hard-boiled Wonderland Book is waiting to be re-read. But I'm not giving that one away by comparing them. In Inception, it's as if people could lucid-dream together & build environments so beautiful, it would also be difficult to wake up from.Īnd then there's the ending. In HBW, I suppose the protagonist wasn't aware that he was creating it but he still came up with a sublime universe that could suck him in if he doesn't try to get out. Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World is a novel by Haruki Murakami that captures the imagination and causes readers to ask questions that push the impossible. In Inception, they came up with a nearly exact estimate of the reality to dream time ratio.Īnother similar concept is the untapped creative prowess of the subconscious. It's been years since I read HBW but I remember that it stated that time can be divided into infinitesimal number of moments. There was the concept about the distortion/stretching of time when one is in a dream. The ending of 'Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World' (SPOILERS) Okay, so what is the meaning of the shadow leaving the end of the world And why the dream reader decides to stay It is heavily implied that if the dream reader would have jumped into the lake the second switch would have gone back to the originary position and he would. I'm not gonna give out spoilers or the twisty stuff, just the things that I noticed that are parallel between them. I've just seen Inception today & I wonder if anybody else here has seen it & recognized some similarities with the dream/subconscious concept of Hard-boiled Wonderland & the End of the World.
